Brief History
Pastor George Cable, pastor of First Baptist Church of West Bend, began Bible classes in Hartford in March of 1962.
Upon being appointed as the State Missions Director for the Conservative Baptist Association of Wisconsin, he was
encouraged by the church at West Bend to organize the Hartford group into an active church.
On October 13, 1963, Pastor Cable met with six couples, and voted to proceed with the organization of "The First
Baptist Church of Hartford." On December 8, 1963, the group again met with Pastor Cable where they voted on the Church
Covenant, Articles of Faith, and the Constitution. Ten names were officially incorporated and Rev. George Cable
was called as interim pastor. Authority was given at this meeting to purchase property for a building. A chapel-style
building was constructed, primarily by the members, on the corner of Washington and Rural Streets. Upon
completion of this building, the church began regular Sunday services, commencing on August 23, 1964.
Pastor Robert Johnson accepted the call as the first pastor and began ministry in January, 1965. During his able
ministry the church prospered, building a parsonage on East Washington Street about a block from the chapel building.
In April 1973, the church voted to purchase the First Methodist Church, parsonage and parking lot on the corner of
Church and South Streets. On July 1, 1973, the church took possession of these properties.
Pastor Johnson resigned in April of 1974 to take on the challenge of church planting in Wisconsin.
Pastor Michael R. Gordon accepted the call to serve as pastor in May of 1974,
and has continued to the present time. First Baptist Church has ordained three men, commissioned one missionary and has fifty-two
former members that are in Christian service today. Praise the Lord, the best is yet to come!!!
